Random Vegas Thoughts

In bullet point form since I am too lazy to blog:
  • Thanks to Dawn Summers and Grubette for the free hotel room!

  • Half poker, half vacation was definitely the right mix for the weekend.

  • 4 days is just about the right amount of time to spend in Vegas.

  • Danny Gans was certainly not my "Entertainer of the Year," no matter what the people say.

  • Penn & Teller, on the other hand, put on a very good show.

  • The $1/$3 no-limit holdem game at the Wynn was one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played (even if the $3 chips required some adjustments).

  • The hour spent playing the $8/$16 limit holdem game (with $2 chips), however, was one of the most frustrating hours of poker I have ever played. (That said, I really shouldn't have been so bothered by the $2 chips, and there's a lot of money to be made there if you have the time and don't mind the variance.)

  • Putting Dawn on tilt for the rest of the night is not a good recipe for fun, yet refusing a low-risk offer of $85 is nigh impossible. Discuss.

  • Playing reasonably well (or at least minimizing the effects of my mistakes) for just about the entire weekend was reassuring. No real hands of note. Played aggressively just about the whole time (and had the odd experience of being the most aggressive player at the table on several different occasions).

  • Mistake-wise: had a few limit hands where I missed a bet or paid off one more bet than I probably should have, had one limit hand where I made just about the worst possible fold heads up on the turn of my last hand at the table, and had one really off (although still profitable) session at the MGM Grand to start the trip.

In the unlikely event that someone new to the site comes here and reads the above comment, please go to Dawn's blog for the definition of the so-called "Alceste-suckout."

Let it be known that I agreed to go because Dawn and pearatty seemed very excited about it. If Danny Gans had not swindled me into paying $100 for a ticket (and had my seat not been in the exact center of the very narrow row), I would have walked out instead of just texting Dawn 2 about the horrors I was witnessing.

A bunch of us went to Vegas between Xmas and NYE in '06. I got off the plane and saw "Danny Gans, entertainer of the year!" Due to the fact that none of us had heard of him, we decided to not attend the show.

Blue Man Group, however - excellent. I was lucky enough to catch Penn & Teller at a show in Philly a few years back, also recommend them.

Hopefully, when I return to Vegas in June '07 I can get back a few thousand dollars that I left there over Christmas time.

Silly Vegas, chips are for fish!

You really should ask a comic before going to see a comic. I could have helped you out of that jam.
